It was 1996, “The Macarena” was the top Pop music single, General Motors unveiled an electric car, President Clinton was re-elected for a second term, and Troklus was tasked to build a compliance program for the University of Louisville. The problem was: she knew next to nothing about compliance programs and few resources existed to help guide her.
The evolution of healthcare compliance
This is not a particularly unique occurrence in healthcare compliance; because of the relative newness of the profession, compliance officers frequently enter the position with no previous experience and little idea how to start building a compliance program. Industry knowledge is certainly an advantage in building a compliance program, but it can be learned.
